A subcutaneous injection delivers medicine to the fatty tissue just below the skin, which allows the medication to be absorbed slowly. At Live Well Cumming, we suggest sub-Q injections primarily for peptides.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to safely give a subcutaneous injection:

  • Rotate between four sites.
  • Pull the skin away from the muscle.
  • Aim for fattier areas.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to safely give a subcutaneous injection:

  1. Gather supplies
    • Syringe and medication (as prescribed).
    • Alcohol swabs or antiseptic wipes.
    • Sharps container for needle disposal.
  1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer.
  1. Prepare the medication
    • Check the medication label for accuracy (correct medication, dosage, expiration date).
    • If using a vial:
      • Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab.
      • Draw air into the syringe equal to the dose of medication.
      • Insert the needle into the vial, push in the air, and then draw out the correct dose.
    • Remove any air bubbles by tapping the syringe gently and pushing the plunger
  1. Choose an injection site. Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation or scar tissue buildup.
    • Outer upper arm (triceps)
    • Abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button).
    • Thigh (front, middle area).
    • Lower back or upper buttocks.
    • Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
  1. Administer the injection
    • Pinch the skin at the injection site to create a fold.
    • Hold the syringe at a 45- to 90-degree angle (depending on needle length and site).
    • Insert the needle quickly and smoothly into the pinched skin.
    • Push the plunger slowly to inject the medication.
    • Remove the needle at the same angle it was inserted.
    • Dispose of the needle into a sharps container. Do not recap the needle.
