- Rotate between four sites.
- Pull the skin away from the muscle.
- Aim for fattier areas.

- Gather supplies
- Syringe and medication (as prescribed).
- Alcohol swabs or antiseptic wipes.
- Sharps container for needle disposal.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer.
- Prepare the medication
- Check the medication label for accuracy (correct medication, dosage, expiration date).
- If using a vial:
- Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab.
- Draw air into the syringe equal to the dose of medication.
- Insert the needle into the vial, push in the air, and then draw out the correct dose.
- Remove any air bubbles by tapping the syringe gently and pushing the plunger
- Choose an injection site. Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation or scar tissue buildup.
- Outer upper arm (triceps)
- Abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button).
- Thigh (front, middle area).
- Lower back or upper buttocks.
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Administer the injection
- Pinch the skin at the injection site to create a fold.
- Hold the syringe at a 45- to 90-degree angle (depending on needle length and site).
- Insert the needle quickly and smoothly into the pinched skin.
- Push the plunger slowly to inject the medication.
- Remove the needle at the same angle it was inserted.
- Dispose of the needle into a sharps container. Do not recap the needle.
